Day 12: Downingtown Veteran’s Memorial in 19335

Day 12 of 365 is a bit of history…. A memorial honoring the veterans of wars sits in the middle of Downingtown Borough. Each and every name… lots of names… lots of memories. The Downingtown Area Veteran’s Memorial pays tribute to the people that answered the call of duty to go fight for our nation.

My grandfather’s name is on the World War II stone… Paul B. McCombs. Thank you, Papap! I remember when my grandmother was fundraising to help build the walls of stone. I come from a military family, so this stuff might be more emotional than it is for some people… and it doesn’t matter what your beliefs are with the politics surrounding the battles …. these are people who served and for that I’m thankful.

The committee is willing to add names to the stones, they are aware they may have missed some! The qualifications are listed as follows on their website at http://DVMF.org

Veteran must have been a Downingtown area resident at the time of entry into the service as defined by the current Downingtown area school district OR have a Downingtown address on official military records.
Veteran must have served during the times of war from World War I to the first Persian Gulf war.

So step back in time when you are in Downingtown or make it a special trip… you may recognize some of the names if you’ve lived around Chester County for a while !
