Chester County and the surrounding area has a LONG history. It is one of the original 3 counties, along with Bucks and Delaware, created by William Penn. He also created the township and borough system to subdivide that area. This area has a rich history in agriculture and was a major industrial hub, as well.
If you want a better understanding and more information about how the the area has changed over the years, then head to West Chester, the hub of Chester County, and visit the Chester County Historical Society. You can see a timeline of period pieces in the museum and peruse books in the library. If you want to take a walking tour, they have guided options and/or self guided options. They also do group outings, as well. There are an amazing amount of historical artifacts still surviving in West Chester and throughout Chester County.
