Day 81: 70th Annual Chester County Day – Chester County, PA
Chester County Day – Saturday, October 2, 2010
Chester County’s Historic House Tour benefits the Chester County Hospital in West Chester, PA. Chester County Day has been conducted by the Women’s Auxiliary of The Chester County Hospital since 1936. It’s a great time to see old houses and get together with friends for a day in the beautiful countryside. You will see people tailgating along the way all day long. Some with elaborate tables decorated with flowers and crystal. There are plenty of places to enjoy your breakfast, lunch, and snacks as you tour. This year’s focus is the northeast quadrant of Chester County and West Chester as well as eight homes in the Chester Springs area.
Your ticket includes admission to the Pickering Hunt with Dr. Edward A. Theurkauf, MFH. It will be moving off at 9:00 am sharp, from the corner of Malin & Pikeland Rds. in Chester Springs. The picture is from our annual Chester County Day start in 2008. The hounds are always a pleasure to watch as they can hardly wait to get going. It’s an amazing experience to learn about and witness the hunt as they ride over the beautiful rolling hills at the break of day.
Also included, are Friday evening previews at Longwood Gardens & The Chester County Historical Society. The PowerPoint presentation shows every home and landmark open for tour. Ticket holders may tour Longwood Gardens at no charge all day on Friday Preview Day. After each evening lecture, the magnificent colored light fountains will be shown.
“Beneath the surface, Chester County Day is really a study in preservation: both the preservation of things of value and the preservation of personal values.”- H.L. Perry Pepper, President of The Chester County Hospital. The hospital started as a little ten bed infirmary in 1892 and has grown through the support of the community into what it is now. Chester County Day is one of the longest running historical house tours in the Nation. Throughout the tour, you will find architectural details inside and out, collections of art and antiques, and beautiful landscapes. The $35 you pay for your ticket enables the Auxiliary to move upwards toward the $4,000,000 mark in donations to the hospital.
If you can’t make it this year, mark your calendar for next year. Chester County Day is always held the first Saturday in October.
